Students drive billions in spending on accommodation, transport, food, retail, technology, and cultural services. When municipalities harness this, university towns become engines of inclusive growth.
Hundreds of thousands of students migrate seasonally from rural communities to urban university hubs. Safe, affordable, integrated transport is not a luxury — it is a foundational condition for educational equity.
Student-centred urban planning integrates IDPs, Spatial Development Frameworks, and higher education expansion into a coherent city vision — creating walkable precincts, mixed-use zones, and innovation districts.
Global competition for students is intensifying. Cities that deliberately brand themselves as student-friendly, safe, and well-serviced attract domestic and international students — and the investment that follows.
Work-integrated learning, cadet programmes, and innovation hubs turn graduates into employable talent and founders. Student Cities links academic programmes to local labour markets and startup ecosystems, so campuses become launchpads rather than holding pens.
Student Cities South Africa 2026 is a structured national policy process, moving from public launch through open policy debate to the National Indaba in Tshwane and onward into new provincial partnerships.

Student Cities South Africa 2026 convenes leading economists, youth leaders, policymakers and practitioners across every event in the national programme.
One of South Africa's foremost statisticians, development economists and public policy thought leaders. Dr. Lehohla led Stats SA's national statistical system from 2000 to 2017. His masterclass address explores Student Cities, Talent Agglomeration and the Knowledge Economy — drawing on global research into how universities, TVET colleges and student populations drive economic growth, innovation and urban competitiveness.
A respected youth development practitioner and global youth leader dedicated to intercultural dialogue, social cohesion and youth empowerment across more than 110 countries. Sandile presents on Skills Development, Employment and Local Labour Markets for Vibrant Student Cities and serves as programme director across the National Indaba.
Creating employability and entrepreneurship opportunities. The Student Cities Cadets System is the student-facing platform of the South African Student Cities Network (SASCN) — giving students real, work-integrated experience across eight cadet streams while building the skills that shape their cities.

Globally, cities like Oxford, Leuven, Melbourne, and Boston demonstrate the transformative power of deliberately student-centred urban planning.
Events are designed for municipalities and LED practitioners, university and TVET leadership, national and provincial government departments (DHET, COGTA, Treasury, Tourism SA), private sector developers and investors, student representative councils and youth organisations, transport authorities and operators, and researchers and urban planners.
The South African Student Cities Framework is the culminating policy document of the 2026 programme. It is drafted based on inputs from the Public Policy Debate and thematic tracks, endorsed by institutional partners, and formally adopted at the South African National Student Cities Indaba in Tshwane. It establishes the national commitment to student-centred urban development.
Municipalities, universities, TVET colleges, and private sector organisations can partner at various levels — as co-hosts, sponsors, content contributors, or institutional endorsers.
